What is Bioesthetic Dentistry?

Bioesthetic Dentistry is a process that includes comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning in order to obtain a healthy, highly functional, unworn chewing system that provides natural beauty (known as optimal biologic form). One of the main issues of Bioesthetic Dentistry is diagnosing causes of chewing system disharmony like tooth wear. It is understood that occlusion has a profound effect on the temporomandibular joint and the airway, so that it is essential for dentists to understand this relationship. Based on profound biological knowledge of the human chewing system, dental professionals learn how to reach the optimal biologic form using a number of different treatments.

The History of OBI Foundation

Bioesthetic™ Dentistry was developed by Robert L. Lee, MS, DDS, culminating from his concept of biologic occlusion. He defined Bioesthetics® as "the study or theory of the beauty of living things in their natural forms and functions“. After its beginnings as the Lee Institute, our organization was transitioned several times and finally became the non-profit education institution (501.3C) named OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic™ Dentistry in 2005. Since then, OBI teaches the biology and clinical practice of Bioesthetic™ Dentistry to dentists, dental technicians, and team members. Officers of the Foundation are elected yearly, and the Foundation’s structure was chosen to perpetuate the teaching of Bioesthetic™ Dentistry. Learn more about the leading personalities with a great impact on the Foundation and its development!
