Dr. MacLean graduated from the University of Alberta School of Dentistry in 1977. He began private practice with a strong interest in preventive care and whole person health. This has led him to further his education in areas of behavioral science, periodontics, orthodontics, occlusion and biologic dentistry. He completed studies in Periodontics under Dr. Stan Sapkos from 1977 through 1981. He studied Gnathology under Dr. Mel Jones from 1978 through 1993. He has studied and completed a program of accreditation in biologic dentistry with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. The IAOMT is a group of physicians, dentists and research scientists who have extensive training and knowledge in the effects of toxic materials used in dentistry and medicine, and who have set standards of care in this field based on scientific research.
In 1983, along with his brother, Dr. Cameron MacLean, opened Dorchester Health Centre in Calgary where he remains in private practice. Dr. MacLean is the Past President of the Calgary Gnathological Society from 1978 to 1993 and served on the Board of Directors for IAOMT from 2000 to 2005. Dr. MacLean graduated from OBI International in 2002 and became a faculty member in 2005. He also served as President of OBI Canada and as a Board member with OBI Foundation prior to be elected by the Board of Directors to serve as President of OBI Foundation in 2012 when Dr. Benson retired from that position. Dr. MacLean lectures and teaches classes on Bioesthetic Dentistry in Canada and the United States.
